A reflection of our Lord himself...
A note from brother Matt Sichel with an update of the proceedings from Special General Conference of the UMC going on now in St Louis, which will decide the future direction of our churches. Please continue to be in prayer for these proceedings. Blessings to all! Brothers and sisters, Today we began the actual legislative work. Our first job was to take the four plans (and other petitions) and rank them in priority order for consideration by the body. The body voted each plan either “high priority” and “low priority.” This was how the vote turned out for the highest 6 proposals for rankings of “high priority”: 63.6% WesPath Pension Legislation (recommended by Board of Pensions for every plan) Petitions 90016-90017 55.5% Traditional Plan 50.1% “Disaffiliation” or Exit Plan “Taylor” Petition 90066 49.5% “Disaffiliation” or Exit Plan “Boyette” Petition 90059 48.7% One Church Plan 48.4% “Disaffiliation” or Exit Plan “Ottjes” Petition 90058 This sets the order in which the Conference will take up the legislation. Each of these items will be taken up in two phases. Firstly they will be taken up and perfected in the “committee” phase tomorrow. They will then move forward to be officially approved on Tuesday. You will see here that the Conference ranked Exit Plans and the Traditional Plan as the near highest priority work to be done. This was the WCA goal! The second bit of work we did was to elect delegates who would preside over the “committee” phase. The WCA preferred candidate for chair, Joe Harris, was elected. This means that he can prioritize those who have opportunity to speak on any issue, and can steer discussion. This is very important when doing the work of the committee. In that process, the WesPath Pension legislation was considered this evening and passed in its first hearing at the “committee” phase with no amendment. After passage of that, we were due to take up the Traditional Plan, but because of the enormous effort it would have been to take up the whole Traditional Plan this evening in the 45 minutes we had left, we adjourned until the morning. So we will return to work on this at 8:20am. As it stands now, based on discussions I’ve had with many delegates this evening, the Traditional Plan seems to have momentum going in tomorrow. After the Traditional Plan gained such a high position, there were some small protests in the hall. In addition, there were immediate attempts from progressive delegates (including our own BWC delegates) to begin stalling. They were stunned and surprised that the Traditional Plan was ranked first, and thus they needed time to revise their strategy for moving forward. Because it has highest priority, it will be able to have the most attention for discussion, amendment and perfection. However, there is still a lot of work to do. At tomorrow morning’s Renewal/Reform Coalition Briefing, I’m sure we’ll hear how the WCA plans to proceed with this development. All in all, things went very well for the WCA and orthodoxy today. I expect many fireworks tomorrow as we begin to really dig into the debate that was put off from 2016. Please continue in prayer for everyone here. There will be pain for many folks no matter what happens. Thank you all for your support thus far!! Blessings and peace, -Matt Sichel
